** a definitive and emphatic "no, not even close."

!! "A long shot" might have come from archery, which would rarely hit the target when shot over a long distance. "Not by a long short" first arose in British horseracing in mid-19th century as a bet made at great odds, a bold wager, on a "long shot" a horse that was not expected to win.
In general it means "not even remotely close" to being successful or winning. but would lead to decisive failure or negative outcome.
